Japan has no shortage of unusual festivals, but the Kōnomono Festival in Ama City, Aichi Prefecture, is in a category of its own. Held in August at Kayatsu Shrine, the event is described as Japan's only pickle festival and has a history stretching back more than 1,300 years.
The shrine is dedicated to Kayano-hime, said to be Japan's only "goddess of pickles." According to local tradition, the area's pickle culture began when offerings of food were placed in jars and accidentally became preserved in salt, eventually being valued for their supposed health benefits.
The festival is also helping bring a local pickle tradition back from the brink. Traditional Kamikayatsu pickles were at risk of disappearing after the pandemic and changes to food production regulations made it harder to continue their traditional production. This year, local volunteers have revived production using karimori, a crisp vegetable traditionally grown in the prefecture's Owari region, with sales resuming at the festival.
Visitors can also take part in a unique pickling ritual, preparing vegetables in earthenware pots while making a wish. The finished pickles are then offered to Atsuta Shrine. There will also be nationwide pickle sales and vegetable-shaped amulets.
The main festival ceremony takes place from around 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., while activities run from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. With its combination of ancient tradition, local food culture, and hands-on experiences, the Kōnomono Festival offers something you're unlikely to find anywhere else in Japan.
