Malaysia Airlines Launches New Kuala Lumpur-Fukuoka Route

The new route opens up even more of Japan

A new Malaysia Airlines route between Kuala Lumpur and Fukuoka, codeshared with Japan Airlines (JAL), is set to make it easier for international travelers to reach Japan's southern regions. The new service launches on September 2, 2026, with JAL already commencing ticket sales last month.

The partnership is about more than simply adding another international connection, with JAL using its domestic network to make Fukuoka a convenient gateway for travelers who want to explore beyond Japan's biggest tourist cities. Malaysia Airlines will add its code to JAL-operated domestic flights to and from Fukuoka Airport, creating connections to destinations across Japan.

For travelers arriving from Southeast Asia, this could make Fukuoka an attractive alternative to flying into Tokyo or Osaka. The city is a major destination in its own right, known for its food, shopping, and relaxed atmosphere, while also providing easy access to the wider Kyushu region. From Fukuoka, travelers can continue on to places such as Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Beppu, as well as destinations elsewhere in Japan.

The expanded connections also support Japan's efforts to spread international tourism beyond its busiest destinations. Bringing overseas visitors directly to cities outside the traditional Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka route can help direct tourism spending toward local businesses and communities, supporting regional economies and revitalization.
