11月末に紅葉の見頃を迎える南禅寺。色鮮やかな楓や銀杏の葉がはらはらと舞う境内は、息をのむ美しさだ。高い格式をもつ南禅寺の住持は、一山一寧や夢窓疎石など、法系を越えた「日本で最も優れた禅僧」がつとめてきた。南禅寺の方丈庭園は、小堀遠州が江戸時代初期に作庭したものと伝えられる。樹木と石組を一カ所にまとめて広い余白を楽しむ意匠と、東から西へ「パースペクティブ」の技法で六つの石を並べたデザインが特徴的である。
