El castillo de Kumamoto en la ciudad del mismo nombre es uno de los tres castillos más importantes del país, junto con el castillo de Himeji y el castillo de Matsumoto. El complejo del castillo sufrió daños masivos en el severo terremoto de Kumamoto el 14 de Abril de 2016.
Como resultado del terremoto de Abril del 2016, el castillo de Kumamoto sufrió graves daños. Si bien los terrenos interiores permanecen cerrados por renovaciones, la fortaleza se puede admirar desde el exterior a través de una ruta especial de 400 m los Domingos, días festivos nacionales y algunos Sábados. Se espera que la fortaleza interior vuelva a abrir en la primavera del 2021, aunque se espera que las renovaciones en todo el sitio demoren décadas.
El castillo fue construido entre 1601 y 1607 bajo el príncipe Kato Kiyomasa, de quien se decía que era particularmente bueno construyendo castillos. Ya existían dos castillos más pequeños en el sitio, los cuales se integraron en la nueva instalación. En el curso de la Restauración Meiji y la Rebelión Satsuma, el castillo fue asediado en 1877 y el torreón y otras partes del complejo fueron destruidas por el fuego. A partir de 1960, se reconstruyeron algunos de los edificios dañados, siendo una especialidad el Palacio Honmaru Goten, que fue reconstruido minuciosamente en 2008 y se basó en el original el cual fue construido para el 400 aniversario del castillo.
Durante el terremoto de Kumamoto en 2016, partes de la torre del homenaje, las murallas del castillo y otros edificios sufrieron daños parcialmente graves. Se espera que las extensas renovaciones continúen hasta 2036. Kumamoto Castle has introduced a new fund raising system called, "Micro Lordship System", and has been raising donations from all over the world for the restoration/maintenance of the castle. Anybody can contribute, and the minimum donation is 10,000 yen. If you donate 10,000 yen to Kumamoto Castle, you'll receive a 'Certificate of Micro Lordship', and 'The Micro Lord Free Pass' as well as having your name written on a wooden nameplate which will be displayed inside the main tower of Kumamoto Castle forever.
We were really lucky, it was a beautiful day. So instead of spending our time inside the castle museum, we took our time to explore the castle grounds with all those lovely walking paths inside and outside the castle walls, which to be honest are just as impressive as the castle itself. We got all kind of different views and it was hard to pick a favorite.

Suizenji Jojuen es un jardín paisajístico japonés tradicional el cual se estableció a fines del siglo XVII. Debido a su enorme tamaño de 64 hectáreas a menudo se lo conoce como Parque Suizenji.
