Japan's lakes have long captured the imagination of artists, writers and travelers. Reflections of mountains, seasonal colors and tranquil waters have appeared in everything from ukiyo-e prints to modern photography, helping shape some of the country's most iconic images. That enduring appeal was recently recognized on a global scale, with the Fuji Five Lakes earning a place among the world's 20 most spectacular lakes in Australian publication The Sydney Morning Herald.

Located at the northern foot of Mount Fuji, the Fuji Five Lakes region consists of Kawaguchiko, Yamanakako, Saiko, Shojiko and Motosuko. Most destinations on the list come with a single lake. Japan's entry gives travelers five, all set against the backdrop of the country's highest and most famous mountain.

The ranking praised the area's classic scenery, particularly the way Mount Fuji is reflected in the lakes' calm waters. Among the five, Kawaguchiko is the best known and often serves as a gateway to the region. Its lakeside views of Mount Fuji attract visitors throughout the year, while spring brings an extra flourish of color as cherry blossoms bloom along the shoreline.

While Kawaguchiko draws the crowds, the remaining lakes offer a quieter side of the region. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails, peaceful viewpoints and a slower pace while taking in the surrounding countryside. Beyond the lakes themselves, the area is home to numerous other attractions, including quality museums and art galleries.

The combination of natural scenery, outdoor activities and cultural attractions helps explain why the Fuji Five Lakes continue to rank among Japan's most beloved destinations. For travelers hoping to experience one of the country's most iconic landscapes, this internationally recognized spot offers plenty of reasons to linger.
