A good hotel can make a surprisingly big difference to a Japan trip. After a full day of temples, markets, trains, and sightseeing, having somewhere you can actually spread out can feel like a luxury in itself.
MIMARU SUITES Kyoto CENTRAL has been chosen as a "Selected Hotel" in the Michelin Guide 2026, making it the first MIMARU property to receive the recognition.
Located just three minutes from Karasuma Oike Station, the hotel has 19 suites, and every one is at least 85 square meters with two or more bedrooms. That makes it quite a different proposition from the compact hotel rooms travelers may be accustomed to finding in major Japanese cities.
The suites are designed with families and groups in mind, with separate bedrooms alongside a living and dining area where everyone can hang out. There are also kitchens, two bathrooms and toilets, and a washer and dryer, which could be particularly handy for longer stays or families traveling with children. Some of the larger suites also include tatami areas with futon bedding, adding a Japanese element to what is otherwise a fairly home-like setup.
The location is another bonus. Nijo Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Nishiki Market are all within walking distance, while Karasuma Oike provides access to both the Karasuma and Tozai subway lines. It is also positioned as a convenient base for trips beyond Kyoto, including to Osaka, Nara, and Shiga.
The Michelin Guide's hotel selections consider factors including design, service, individuality, value, and the sense of place offered by a property.
For travelers visiting Kyoto as a family, with friends, or as a multigenerational group, the appeal here may be less about having somewhere fancy to sleep and more about having somewhere comfortable to come back to. After all, a great Japan itinerary is even better when you can put your feet up at the end of the day!
