Japan is famous for its hot spring inns, but a new hotel in Beppu, Oita Prefecture, is giving the traditional onsen stay a contemporary twist. ROCK & STEAM by SEKIYA RESORT is scheduled to open on December 18, 2026, in Kannawa, a historic hot spring district known for its atmospheric streets and geothermal activity.
Described as a “museum where you can stay,” the hotel combines traditional hot spring culture with contemporary art, private bathing and sauna experiences. Its concept of “modern hot spring therapy” invites guests to slow down and enjoy Beppu's natural surroundings in a setting that feels more like an art gallery than a conventional ryokan.
Art is central to the experience, with works by internationally active artists displayed throughout the property. These include a specially created installation by contemporary artist Soo Sunny Park, known for exploring light, shadow and space, alongside photographs by Naoki Ishikawa that reflect the atmosphere and landscapes of Kannawa.
The hotel has 21 guest rooms, each featuring a private hot spring bath carved from rock. Some rooms also offer private saunas, with designs inspired by a tea room, forest and rock formations. The rock-themed sauna suite even incorporates a footbath using Beppu's own hot spring water.
Dining is another part of the experience, with plans for two restaurants serving robatayaki, a traditional charcoal-grilling style, and teppanyaki.
For travelers wanting to experience Japan's onsen culture while enjoying contemporary design, art and a little luxury, ROCK & STEAM offers a fresh take on the hot spring getaway.
Reservations are already open for stays from December 18, 2026, through the hotel's official website and Japanese travel booking platforms.
