El jardín Kairakuen fue construido hace relativamente poco tiempo, en 1841, por el príncipe Tokugawa Nariaki. A diferencia de los otros dos grandes jardines paisajísticos de Japón, Kenrokuen y Korakuen, Kairakuen no era solo para el disfrute del príncipe gobernante, sino también estaba abierto al público, Kairakuen significa "Parque para disfrutar juntos".
El jardín consiste en un bosque con 3000 árboles con más de un centenar de diferentes variedades de ciruelos con flores blancas, rosadas y rojas. El Festival de los Ciruelos en Flor en Mito (Mito Ume Matsuri) se lleva a cabo anualmente desde mediados de Febrero hasta Marzo.
Además de los ciruelos, Kairakuen también tiene un bosque de bambú, bosques de cedros y el “Kobuntei”, un edificio tradicional de estilo japonés. Como todo el parque, el edificio Kobuntei siempre estuvo abierto al público y sirvió para propósitos educativos y recreativos. Desde el último piso del edificio hay una hermosa vista de Kairakuen y del cercano lago Senba.
