Japan's historic temples are known for their spiritual atmosphere, but a new attraction in Yamagata Prefecture is offering visitors a rather different way to connect with centuries of tradition. Yamadera Galleria opened on October 1, 2026, and brings together the philosophy of a mountain temple and immersive digital art.
Located near Yamadera Temple, officially known as Hojusan Risshakuji, the facility reimagines the site's approximately 1,200-year history through video, sound, light, scent, and interactive technology. The result is an experience that combines traditional Japanese spirituality with contemporary art.
The main exhibition, SHO-O, unfolds across six spaces exploring the connections between people, nature, and the world around them. Visitors can encounter digital landscapes inspired by Yamadera's mountain scenery, installations influenced by the temple's distinctive rock formations, and spaces incorporating seasonal scents.
One particularly unusual feature is the use of smartwatch data. By responding to physical signals such as heart rate, the installations can change their light and visual effects according to visitors' bodily responses. Rather than simply looking at artwork, guests become part of the experience, exploring how their own state can influence the way they perceive their surroundings.
The project offers an alternative way to appreciate Yamadera's cultural heritage, particularly for visitors who cannot manage the more than 1,000 stone steps leading up the mountain. It also provides a sheltered indoor experience when the weather isn't suitable for climbing.
After exploring the exhibition, visitors can relax in the adjoining cafe lounge, which offers views of Yamadera's temple buildings and mountain paths. A calligraphy experience paired with matcha or tea provides another opportunity to slow down and enjoy the setting.
