Manyo Poetry Festival and Firefly Viewing 2026

A seasonal spectacle merged with traditional culture

If you're visiting Japan in early summer, few experiences feel as magical as watching fireflies dance through the evening air. One event that combines this seasonal spectacle with traditional culture is the Manyo Poetry Festival and Firefly Viewing Event at Manriki Park in Yamanashi City, an annual celebration that has been running for more than 30 years.

Held at the park's scenic Manyo no Mori area, the free event offers plenty to enjoy throughout the day before the fireflies become the stars of the evening. Visitors can browse local food stalls, watch a variety of stage performances, and soak up the relaxed atmosphere that makes regional festivals so memorable.

The event also celebrates the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest existing collection of poetry. Poetry recitations and cultural performances bring centuries-old literature to life, while taiko drumming, music, and community events create a lively festival atmosphere. Families will find plenty to keep children entertained as well, with game corners, special displays, and other hands-on activities often featured.

As darkness falls, attention shifts to the park's preserved natural habitat, where fireflies flicker among the trees and waterways. Volunteer-guided viewing tours are sometimes available, offering insight into the insects and the conservation efforts that help protect them.

Beyond being a festival, the event reflects Yamanashi City's commitment to preserving the clean water and green spaces that fireflies depend on while encouraging appreciation for Japan's cultural heritage. For travelers looking to experience a quieter, more traditional side of Japan, it offers a memorable blend of nature, history, and community spirit during the early summer season.
