Akita Prefecture Launches Campaign to Attract Winter Travelers

Japan's most famous cold-weather destinations can draw large crowds, but heading off the beaten path offers another way to experience the country. For travelers planning a winter trip, Akita Prefecture in the Tohoku region is worth considering, with snow-covered landscapes, secluded hot springs, regional food, and opportunities to spend time with Japan's much-loved Akita dogs.

A new winter travel campaign, “Akita Prefecture: Still Undiscovered,” is highlighting experiences that showcase a different side of the region. Running for stays between November 2026 and February 2027, the campaign includes discounted accommodation packages that can incorporate activities, meals, local sake, and regional products.

Winter scenery is one of Akita's biggest attractions. Visitors can explore snowy landscapes and frost-covered trees, while autumn foliage may linger in the foothills early in the season. Special frost-covered tree tours are also planned for the heart of winter.

For a restorative escape, Akita is home to secluded hot spring destinations such as Nyuto Onsen and Tamagawa Onsen. Sauna enthusiasts can also experience distinctive offerings, including a sauna that uses Lake Tazawa as a natural cold plunge and outdoor saunas surrounded by snow.

Food provides another reason to visit. Local specialities include Inaniwa udon noodles, Hinai chicken, kiritanpo hot pot, and iburigakko smoked pickles, alongside sake brewed during the cold winter months. Travelers can also arrange experiences involving Akita dogs, including opportunities to spend time with the region's famous breed.

Eligible overnight stays can receive discounts of up to 12,000 JPY per person when qualifying add-on packages are used, although availability and conditions vary by booking site. Coupons are limited, so early reservations are recommended.

For travelers hoping to discover Japan beyond its busiest winter hotspots, Akita offers a compelling mix of nature, food, hot springs, and regional culture.
