Japan has been named one of the world's 25 best family holiday destinations for 2026 by Australian newspaper The Age, highlighting the country's vibrant festivals and cultural experiences as key reasons to visit.

According to the publication, travel remains one of the most rewarding ways for families to bond, offering opportunities for shared experiences, discovery, and memorable moments. With 2026 shaping up as a year full of travel possibilities, Japan stands out as a destination that caters to a wide range of ages, from young children to teenagers.

While Japan's hot and humid summers are often seen as less ideal for sightseeing, The Age points out that this season can actually offer excellent value for families. Airfares to Japan are typically at their lowest during the summer months, making it a more affordable time to visit. More importantly, summer coincides with some of the country's most spectacular traditional festivals, which can be especially engaging for older children.

Among the standout events mentioned are the colorful Aomori Nebuta Festival in northern Japan, Kyoto's historic Gion Matsuri, Osaka's lively Tenjin Matsuri, and Tokyo's dazzling Sumida River Fireworks. These large-scale celebrations showcase Japan's rich cultural heritage through elaborate floats, parades, and vibrant displays, offering families a chance to experience local traditions firsthand.

The newspaper also recommends staying at a traditional Japanese inn, or ryokan, for a more immersive cultural experience. A typical ryokan stay includes sleeping on futon bedding, enjoying seasonal meals, and wearing a yukata robe, all of which provide a deeper insight into Japanese customs and hospitality.

For Australian travelers, accessibility is another advantage. Direct flights to Tokyo are available from many major Australian cities through carriers such as Qantas and Jetstar, making Japan a convenient option for a family getaway.
