One of the easiest and most popular ways to get around Japan is by train, especially for those planning to cover multiple regions in a single trip. However, from October 1st it's set to get a little more expensive, with the Japan Rail Pass increasing in price for the first time in three years.
The change comes alongside fare revisions across several operators, including JR East, JR Hokkaido, JR West, and JR Kyushu. Overall, adult passes will increase by around 5 to 6 percent.
For many travelers, the Rail Pass is often part of the early planning stage of a Japan trip. It's commonly used for itineraries that link cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima, offering a simple way to move between regions without needing to calculate individual fares along the way.
After the update, a 7-day standard pass will jump from 50,000 to 53,000 JPY, while the Green Class option will increase from 70,000 to 74,000 JPY.
The pass still tends to work best for those covering longer distances or taking multi-city trips, so its value really depends on how you plan to travel. If you're visiting later in the year, it may be worth taking the revised pricing into account when deciding whether it fits your itinerary.
