A Day in Higashiyama

Travel back in time in Kyoto's most picturesque ward

Higashiyama is a district to the east of Kyoto's city center. Sitting between the Kamo River and the Higashiyama Mountain Range, the narrow streets between Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu Temple are lined with traditional merchant houses selling crafts, sweets and local specialties. In Higashiyama, the feeling of old Kyoto has been preserved, with shops offering the chance to experience tea ceremony or dress up as a maiko or samurai for a photo session. Travel back in time during a walk or (even better) rickshaw ride through historic architecture in Kyoto's most picturesque district.
