Kyoto Art Fireworks 2026

A spectacular music-synchronized fireworks show

Every summer in June, the night sky above Kyoto is transformed into a massive open-air stage as dazzling fireworks burst in perfect sync with music at Kyoto Racecourse.

Originally launched in Kyoto City in 2018, Kyoto Art Fireworks introduced audiences to a style of “artistic fireworks” that combines elaborate pyrotechnics with precisely choreographed music. Unlike traditional fireworks festivals that focus primarily on scale and duration, this event is designed as a complete performance experience. Every launch is timed to match the melodies, rhythms, and emotional shifts in the soundtrack.

The concept behind artistic fireworks centers on synchronization and storytelling. Over the course of a non-stop 60-minute performance, fireworks are launched with extraordinary precision, controlled down to 1/30th of a second. Artists and organizers calculate the launch timing, the duration of each burst, and the lingering glow left in the sky.

Music plays a central role in shaping the atmosphere of Kyoto Art Fireworks. Past setlists have included a broad range of genres, from J-pop and Western pop songs to orchestral and classical compositions. This wide musical variety makes sure that the event caters to audiences of different ages and backgrounds.

A major creative force behind each fireworks program is Japanese choreographer Ryo Oya, one of the country’s few specialists in synchronized fireworks direction. Oya has earned recognition for collaborations with artists across multiple creative fields, including floral artist Shogo Kariyazaki and fashion designer Junko Koshino. He has also brought his work to audiences overseas.

Beyond the fireworks themselves, the event also highlights community participation. Organizers recruit volunteers to assist with preparations, operations, and post-event cleanup efforts months before.
