Tokyo is getting a new teamLab destination, and it is set to be considerably larger than the immersive art experiences currently attracting millions of visitors to the city.
teamLab TOKYO (tentative name) is scheduled to open in Ariake in 2032. The waterfront development will include a teamLab museum covering approximately 30,000 square meters, as well as a continuous open area incorporating greenery, plazas, cafes, and other spaces for visitors to explore.
For international travelers, the project could provide another reason to venture into Ariake, a waterfront area of Tokyo that is home to attractions including Tokyo Big Sight and the Toyosu waterfront.
The scale of the new venue reflects just how popular teamLab has become with visitors to Japan. teamLab Borderless in Azabudai Hills and teamLab Planets TOKYO in Toyosu attracted a combined 4.2 million visitors in 2025. The experiences have become destinations in their own right, with visitor survey data indicating that teamLab can be a motivating factor for people traveling to Japan.
So, what makes teamLab so popular? Rather than simply looking at artworks, visitors step into them. Digital installations respond to movement, light, sound, and the surrounding environment, creating immersive spaces where the boundaries between the artwork and the visitor become blurred. The highly visual nature of the experiences also makes them particularly appealing to international travelers and social media audiences.
The new development follows international expansion for teamLab, which has permanent exhibitions in cities including Tokyo, Kyoto, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, and Macau, with further locations planned.
There is also some recognition behind Tokyo's teamLab success. Azabudai Hills and teamLab Borderless received the Grand Prize at Trip.com Group's 2025 Global Tourism Innovation Project Awards, the only Japanese initiative selected for the honour.
With teamLab TOKYO still several years away, there's plenty of time for it to become another major addition to the Tokyo itinerary for visitors looking for something beyond traditional museums and attractions.
