A recent ranking by The Sydney Morning Herald has placed Tokyo at number one among Asia's 25 greatest cities to visit, reinforcing Japan's strong appeal among international travelers. With more than a million Australians visiting Japan in the past year, interest in the destination continues to grow, particularly among first-time and repeat visitors looking for a mix of modern city life and cultural depth.

Tokyo's scale is one of its defining characteristics. The greater metropolitan area is home to close to 40 million people, yet the city is widely noted for its organization and efficiency. As the Sydney Morning Herald mentioned, even with large crowds and dense urban development, Tokyo maintains a sense of order that can be surprising for newcomers. Major sites such as Shibuya Crossing highlight the city's energy, while quieter spaces like Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens offer a more relaxed environment within easy reach.

Cultural experiences are another key draw. Visitors can explore contemporary art at the Mori Art Museum or engage with large-scale digital installations at teamLab Borderless. Districts such as Harajuku provide insight into youth culture and fashion, adding another layer to the city's diverse appeal.

Tokyo's foodie scene is equally significant. Travelers can expect a wide spectrum of dining options, from casual local eateries to high-end restaurants. As the SMH noted, it is often the smaller details that leave a lasting impression, whether that is discovering a hidden bar or finding high-quality food in everyday settings such as convenience stores. Even public amenities reflect this attention to detail, with projects involving architects like Kengo Kuma and Tadao Ando contributing to thoughtfully designed urban spaces.

Beyond the capital, Kyoto ranked seventh on the same list, offering a contrasting experience centered on traditional architecture, temples, and historical districts. Together, these destinations highlight the range available to inbound travelers considering Japan.
